COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The No. 4 LSU softball team produced a pair of multiple-run innings and scored in four straight innings Saturday, while getting a gem from pitcher Allie Walljasper to defeat No. 11 Texas A&M 6-1 to even the Southeastern Conference series.
After being held to just three hits on Friday, the Tigers (25-4, 3-2 SEC) finished with nine, scoring twice in the second and fourth innings while scoring consecutively from the second to the fifth innings to pull ahead and claim the victory.
Sunday’s finale is set for 12:30 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.
Walljasper (4-2) earned the complete-game victory by shutting down Texas A&M (26-3, 1-1), allowing four hits while allowing an unearned run. She struck out two and did not issue a walk, tossing 102 pitches in the win.
LSU got multiple hits from Bailey Landry, Sahvanna Jaquish and Elyse Thornhill. Thornhill was one of two Tigers to drive in multiple runs, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, while Landry as 2-for-4 with an RBI and run and Jaquish going 2-for-4 with a run.
Bianka Bell went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, including a solo home run.
Samantha Show (15-3) who earned the win Friday, suffered the loss on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk in two innings. Katie Marks pitched the next five, allowing four runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
In the top of the second, Jaquish singled, and Kellsi Kloss doubled to set up Landry ripped, who a single the opposite way to score Jaquish, moving Kloss up and advancing to second on the throw in to give LSU a 1-0 lead.
Thornhill lifted one high deep to center, reaching the warning track for the out, to score scoring Kloss from third to make it 2-0.
After a grounder to second for the first out, a single to left put one on for Texas A&M in the bottom of the second. An error on a force play at second put runners at the corners, but a strikeout and slow grounder to Walljasper kept the Aggies off of the board.
Bell home run was hit into a 20 mph wind to dead center to put the Tigers up 3-0 in the third.
A three-base error to open the bottom of the third put a runner at third for Texas A&M, as a sacrifice fly on the next play drove in the unearned run to make it 3-1 LSU.
Thornhill roped a looping shot down the right field line and slid in under the tag for a double to open the top of the fourth. Sanchez ripped a double off the wall in left to score the left fielder and give LSU a 4-1 lead.
Simmons earned a walk, followed by another walk to Constance Quinn to load the bases for LSU. After a strikeout, Bell brought in another run on a fielder’s choice to put LSU up 5-1.
With an out in the top of the fifth, Landry ripped a double to right center to reach base. Thornhill singled through the infield to score Landry and put LSU up 6-1.
