LSU's softball offense started the season slowly, but pitcher Carley Hoover wouldn't allow the Lady Tigers to falter.

Hoover pitched a dominant shutout as No. 8 LSU opened its season Thursday night with a 3-0 victory over Illinois-Chicago at Tiger Park.

Hoover struck out 12 and allowed just two hits and a walk in a complete game. She didn't allow a baserunner until the fourth inning, and only one runner reached third base.

LSU didn't get on the scoreboard itself until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Taryn Antoine singled home Becca Schulte. The Lady Tigers were hitless until Amber Serrett's single earlier in the inning.

The Lady Tigers took complete control in the sixth inning.

Aliyah Andrews opened the frame with a walk. She stole second, and then she and Michaela Schlattman executed a double steal after Schlattman also walked. Andrews scored on a groundout, and Shemiah Sanchez doubled home Schlattman to make it 3-0.

Sanchez's double was LSU's only extra-base hit.

The Lady Tigers open the Tiger Classic on Friday with a 5 p.m. game against Texas-Arlington and a scheduled 7:30 p.m. game against Southern Miss. LSU is scheduled to play UMass and Syracuse at the same times Saturday.
