1. MODERN TIMES
New SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey paid homage to recently retired SEC commish Mike Slive during his speech to open SEC Media Days, talked about his new Twitter handle (@GregSankey) and quoted Bob Dylan, a pointed reference to changing times. In his first major address since taking over, Sankey spoke of competitive zeal, idealism and putting more emphasis on academics. In Slive he has a tough act to follow, but it was a confidence-inspiring start.
2. DAYLIGHT COME
Auburn hasn’t won a game, day or night, at LSU since way back in 1999. This year, when Auburn comes calling in Tiger Stadium on Sept. 19, the game will be a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on CBS, LSU’s first home day game since November 2013. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said it still will be tough to play LSU at home, but “it may be a little bit of an advantage that we’re playing during the day.”
3. COVER CHARGE
Maybe it’s because Florida is the “Sunshine State,” but Florida is finally opening an indoor practice facility in September. Florida was a victim of its own success, winning without the kind of facilities many other SEC teams had. Former coach Will Muschamp lobbied for the $15 million building, and new coach Jim McElwain pushed to make it bigger, with a full field instead of a 70-yard one.
4. ANCHOR DOWN ... UNDER
Vanderbilt sophomore tailback Ralph Webb spent part of his summer not in scorching seven-on-even drills but in Australia, studying rainforests and snorkeling among sea turtles on the Great Barrier Reef. “It’s something few people get a chance to do,” he said. Vandy coach Derek Mason said 40 Commodores had internships this summer. Maybe that’s why Vandy went 3-9 last year, but maybe it’s not a bad idea, either.
