Water valet

Two consecutive days of rain didn't stop LSU coach Les Miles from holding a full day's work Saturday. Players were transported by vans to the football operations building from their apartment complex, surrounded by more than a foot of water. The Tigers were scheduled to hold meetings throughout the day and then participate in their first full camp scrimmage on Sunday afternoon in the indoor facility. During camp, players stay in West Campus Apartments, a complex located just off Nicholson Drive and near LSU's track stadium. Photos of the complex's parking lot showed at least a foot of water Saturday afternoon. According to at least one post on social media, a few players waded through the water.

Return man

Defensive backs Donte Jackson and Tre'Davious White are battling for the job at returning punts, Jackson said last week, but running back Derrius Guice has the kickoff return job secured. "We got an awesome kickoff returner. I don’t see him going anywhere," Jackson said. Guice returned 20 of 35 kickoffs last season for an average of 23.60 yards. That ranked 46th nationally. Jackson returned punts while White missed time with an injury last year, returning four for 6 yards. White returned 20 punts for an average of 20.8 yards. That's 20th nationally.

Missing piece

LSU's offense line has its main man back. Senior center Ethan Pocic missed LSU spring practice while recovering from hip surgery. He got cleared for good in May, worked out with the team this summer and has participated in preseason camp. "We were definitely missing him when he was gone for the spring. Missing piece," fellow lineman Josh Boutte said. "When he came back, it was like he was never (gone). When he wasn’t there, he was like another coach."

Days to kickoff: 20 (from Sunday)

2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, vs. Wisconsin at Lambeau Field

Injury report

There was no media availability Saturday, so an updated injury report was not available.

At least a handful of players aren't expected to participate in the scrimmage. Defensive linemen Christian LaCouture and Isaiah Washington are out for the season after seriously damaging knee ligaments in practice last week.

Outside linebacker Corey Thompson is expected to be out "6-8 weeks," a source said, after fracturing his lower leg at practice Wednesday. He could return around midseason.

Next up

LSU is off Sunday. The program canceled its annual media and fan day because of the flooding.
