The hiring of Steve Ensminger this week was the first of four new staff moves coming to LSU.
The school officially announced the hiring in a full-time role of longtime NFL receivers coach Jerry Sullivan on Thursday afternoon. Sullivan, a consultant this past year, was named as a senior offensive assistant and passing game coordinator.
During an interview Thursday, coach Ed Orgeron shook of critics about his age. Sullivan is 73.
"It’s knowledge," Orgeron said. "The NFL has guys that are that old. Jerry is going to bring the knowledge. He’s a walking encyclopedia. Jerry is in here as the mastermind. Age doesn’t factor in. It helps. He’s got more experience."
The hirings aren't over.
Greg McMahon, an analyst this past year, will join the staff as special teams coordinator, and the school will hire a defensive assistant with the new 10th full-time coaching spot. University officials would not confirm the moves Thursday, but an announcement on McMahon is expected by next week.
LSU promoted Ensminger from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, introducing him in a news conference Thursday.

It’s a busy week and a busy weekend for LSU – and it has nothing to do with the coaching staff shuffling.
Sullivan, 73, will work more with the outside receivers, while Mickey Joseph concentrates his attention on the inside/slot wideouts. Sullivan and Joseph will coach tight ends when they are a part of the passing game. New offensive line coach James Cregg and offensive line assistant John Decoster are expected to handle the tight ends for run-game purposes.
Orgeron expects to fill his final open coaching spot with a defensive assistant, likely a safeties coach. That hire is being made by defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.
Sullivan brings with him a wealth of experience at the next level. He's developed more than 10 NFL Pro Bowlers. He's someone Orgeron sought for his staff last January, offering him a consultant role while at the Senior Bowl in Mobile.
"The wealth of knowledge he has in the passing game ... he’ll compliment Steve better than anyone I could imagine. Reason I hired Jerry as a (consultant) … Pete Jenkins told me, ‘If you want someone to teach the fundamentals in the passing game like I teach defensive line, you'll find Jerry Sullivan.’
"I went to the Senior Bowl this time last year. He comes up to me. I said, ‘Coach, I want to hire you as an analyst.’ Somebody was going to hire him, 2-3 (schools) were going after him. I said, ‘I want you to come to LSU, coach.’"
LSU is losing its man in the middle.
