KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Haley Bearden's two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning helped Tennessee sweep a doubleheader and complete a three-game sweep of LSU in SEC softball action Saturday.
In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, LSU (32-10, 7-7 SEC) took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning before Tennessee (37-8, 8-7) tied it at 3-3 in the seventh to send it to extra innings.
After LSU failed to score in the top of the eighth, Tennessee's Abby Lockman singled to open the eighth.
Bearden then connected on a Carly Hoover pitch for a two-run homer to right field to end the game and series.
Hoover (14-5) took the complete-game loss. She allowed five earned runs on nine hits and struck out five.
Aliyah Andrews and Shemiah Sanchez each had two hits for the Tigers.
In the first game Saturday, the Vols held off the Tigers 3-2 by scoring one run in the first inning, one in the third and one in the sixth to overcome a 13-strikeout performance from Hoover.
Matty Moss (16-3) went 6⅔ innings and recorded four strikeouts to lead Tennessee. Aubrey Leach put the home team up early with a first-inning leadoff walk. She advanced on a steal and wild pitch before scoring on a passed ball.
Tennessee added another run in the bottom of the third as Leach again reached on a leadoff walk advanced on a Jenna Holcomb single and scored on another passed ball.
LSU got a run back in the top of the fifth as Taryn Antoine's two-out double scored Elyse Thornhill and cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Lady Vols increased their advantage to two once again in the sixth. After Chelsea Seggern reached base on a single, pinch runner Treasury Poindexter came in and stole second. Scarlet McSwain then drilled a double to score Poindexter.
The Tigers cut it to 3-2 in the seventhk as Becca Schulte scored from third on a Emily Griggs hit.
