The LSU basketball team will meet Texas Tech in the Southeastern Conference/Big 12 Challenge this season, the SEC announced Tuesday.
LSU will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Jan. 28, 2017 in the fourth annual challenge between the two conferences. It will be the Tigers’ third consecutive appearance in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Tipoff times and network assignments will be announced this summer, but all 10 games in this year’s challenge will again be televised by the ESPN family of networks.
LSU and Texas Tech will be playing for the third time in the past four seasons. The Tigers won both matchups — 71-69 in Lubbock in 2013-14 and 69-64 in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center the following season.
In its other SEC/Big 12 Challenge games, LSU defeated West Virginia 74-73 in 2014-15 and last season dropped a 77-75 thriller to then-No. 1 Oklahoma in the Assembly Center.
The 10 games in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge was played on one day in late January last year for the first time to maximize television exposure. The same format will be used this season with 10 of the SEC’s 14 teams facing all 10 schools from the Big 12.
The four SEC teams not participating this season — Alabama, Mississippi State, Missouri and South Carolina — will play each other in conference games the same day.
Seven of the 10 challenge games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. Also, all 10 games will be available via WatchESPN and ESPN’s College GameDay road show will originate from one of the contests.
Twelve of the 20 participating teams earned postseason berths in 2016 and seven of the 10 games will feature at least one team that earned invites to the 2016 NCAA tournament.
“The SEC/Big 12 Challenge is a unique opportunity to showcase our basketball programs,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement released by the league. “As evidenced this past season, playing the event on a single date in January puts our programs in the college basketball spotlight.”
With the addition of the Texas Tech game, LSU’s 2016-17 schedule is slowly starting to take shape.
The Tigers will play at Wake Forest and host Houston and College of Charleston, and Coach Johnny Jones’ team will play three games in the Battle 4 Atlantis in The Bahamas from Nov. 23-25.
First-day matchups haven’t been set yet, but the other teams in the tournament are Baylor, Louisville, Michigan State, Old Dominion, St. John’s, VCU and Wichita State.
