Break out the hyphens: LSU women’s basketball coach Nikki Caldwell is now Nikki Caldwell-Fargas.
The fourth-year LSU coach married longtime fiancée Justin Fargas on Aug. 9 in Las Vegas. She said she has decided to use both names professionally.
The two have been in a relationship since before Caldwell became LSU’s coach in 2011. Caldwell gave birth to their daughter, Justice Simone Fargas, in March 2012.
“It’s a lifetime commitment,” Caldwell-Fargas said Friday. “We’re very blessed to have each other and Justice.”
Fargas is a native of Los Angeles who played running back at Southern California before going on to a seven-year NFL career with the Oakland Raiders from 2003-09. He is the son of veteran actor Antonio Fargas, famous for his role on “Starsky and Hutch” in the 1970s.
Caldwell-Fargas said the wedding was a small ceremony at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel attended by only family and friends. Justice served as her parents’ flower girl.
“My players asked, ‘Can we come?’ And I said, ‘You’re not going to Las Vegas,’ ” she said.
In lieu of wedding gifts, the couple has asked that donations be made to the Big Buddy Program of Baton Rouge.
The Lady Tigers open the season Nov. 14 against Arkansas-Little Rock.
