Ten LSU players who didn't travel with the team for the season opener practiced Monday, but one of those players was working with the scout team.

Frank Herron, the fifth-year senior defensive lineman, donned a scout-team jersey during Tuesday's drills. Herron's status is uncertain; he was one of 13 scholarship players left behind in Baton Rouge for the game against BYU in New Orleans on Saturday.

The Tigers beat the Cougars 27-0 despite playing without those 13 players, most notably starters Donnie Alexander and Kevin Toliver and rotational players Herron and Michael Divinity. Toliver, Divinity and Alexander were at practice Monday.

Their presence at practice does not guarantee their return for this weekend's game against Chattanooga, but coach Ed Orgeron said Saturday that "several" of those who did not travel last week will return this week.

Only three of the 13 were missing: receiver Dee Anderson, edge rusher Sci Martin and tight end Caleb Roddy. Those players have been in and out or practice during the preseason.

Orgeron is refusing to reveal why the 13 players did not travel with the team. He suggested last week that several players were suspended for the opener. As a policy, Orgeron said, he would not announce suspensions. The Tigers traveled two injured players to New Orleans: edge rushers Arden Key (shoulder) and Andre Anthony (ankle).

Other practice notes:

  • Defensive end Rashard Lawrence was not at practice, but he did not suffer any noticeable or significant injury in the opener. He could be resting for precautionary reasons.
  • Saahdiq Charles was practicing with the starters at right guard. Charles started against BYU and played six of 10 drives. Ed Ingram rotated with him, playing in four drives and entering for Charles midway through one drive.
  • Cam Lewis was participating in drills with the cornerbacks. Lewis was spotted Saturday warming up with the cornerbacks during pregame drills. He played safety during his redshirt year last season, but the Tigers are low on cornerback depth. Kristian Fulton's eligibility is unclear. He did not travel with the team last weekend, and the program lost Saivion Smith to transfer. Toliver also did not travel with the team last week.
