HOOVER, Ala. – It’s LSU against Auburn on Wednesday.
Auburn beat Kentucky 6-3 on Tuesday in the single-elimination day at the Southeastern Conference tournament, thrusting the NCAA bubble Tigers into a game with top-seeded and top-ranked LSU.
The teams meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium as the double-elimination portion of the 12-team event begins.
They’ll be facing each other for a fourth time this season. LSU (46-9) won two of three games against No. 9 seed Auburn (35-22) in Baton Rouge on April 10-12. Coach Paul Mainieri’s team won the opener 3-2 with Jared Poché on the mound, lost the second game 6-1 and claimed the rubber match 6-2.
Poché will get the nod for LSU. He allowed eight hits and two runs in 5.2 innings against Auburn in the regular-season game. Auburn will start righty Rocky McCord (5-4, 3.65) against the Tigers. LSU dinged him for six hits and five earned runs in two innings during the regular season.
The status of AU’s ace, Keegan Thompson (7-3, 3.21), is unclear. He’s been suffering from a lingering elbow injury. Thompson shut down LSU in the 6-1 Game 2 win during the regular season.
Auburn, with a 13-17 regular-season SEC record, is thought to be on the NCAA regional bubble.
