PALM CITY, Fla. — Tenth-ranked LSU finished second at the Valspar Invitational at Floridian on Tuesday.

LSU led by a stroke going into the final round, but second-ranked Florida State, finished five strokes at 845, and LSU shot an 850.

Leading the Tigers on Tuesday were Ben Taylor and Brandon Pierce and Eric Ricard, who helped LSU post a 3-over par 287 in the final round and a three-round score of 12-under 840. Pierce tied for sixth overall with a 210, Taylor tied for 11th at 211 and Ricard was tied for 16 at 212

“This has been a good week for our team and our program to finish well in a very competitive field on a great golf course here at Floridian,” coach Chuck Winstead said. “There are areas we can improve on as we move forward, and we will continue to work toward that. We’re looking forward to seeing how good these guys can become the rest of this season and beyond.”

The Tigers will conclude their regular season at Texas A&M’s Aggie Invitational that will be held April 4-5 at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.

Track and field

BROWN NAMED SEC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: After posting an NCAA-leading and meet-record throw of 207 feet, 11 inches to capture the discus title in LSU’s 2015 outdoor season opener at the Louisiana Classics on Saturday, Tiger senior Rodney Brown was honored for his performance as the Southeastern Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

LSU RANKED NO. 24: The LSU men’s tennis team is ranked No. 24 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division 1 men’s rankings.

The Tigers are 14-3 and 3-2 in the Southeastern Conference.

Women’s tennis

LADY TIGERS HOSTING NICHOLLS: The LSU women’s tennis team (12-7, 3-4 SEC), No. 41 in the latest ITA rankings, takes on Nicholls State at 4 p.m. Wednesday at ‘Dub’ Robinson Stadium.
