This is a three-part series starting Thursday and ending Saturday to preview LSU's spring football practice, which is scheduled to start next Saturday.
S Jacoby Stevens
Height, weight: 6-2, 214
High school (location): Oakland (Murfreesboro, Tennessee)
Spring expectations: Among the half-dozen mid-year enrollees, the expectations might be highest for Stevens, the top-ranked safety in the 2017 class, per 247Sports.com. He’s a guy who should challenge for a starting role at a position that just lost potential first-round NFL draft pick Jamal Adams.
OT Austin Deculus
Height, weight: 6-6, 345
High school (location): Cy-Fair (Cypress, Texas)
Spring expectations: It’s not easy to start on the offensive line as a freshman in the SEC, but Deculus, top 10 among 2017 tackles, is a worthy candidate. The engaging Texan will have to beat out some veterans. Toby Weathersby and K.J. Malone return as LSU’s starting tackles.
S Grant Delpit
Height, weight: 6-3, 190
High school (location): IMGAcademy (Bradenton, Florida)
Spring expectations: Like Stevens, Delpit begins spring practice with a shot to squeeze into the competition for the job to replace Jamal Adams. He might also be an option at the dime package as a sixth defensive back/third safety on the field. He’s a speedy player who originally hails from Houston.
WR Mannie Netherly
Height, weight: 6-3, 185
High school (location): Crosby (Crosby, Texas)
Spring expectations: A top 40 receiver in 2017, Netherly has an advantage in that he plays a position that the Tigers are low on scholarship bodies. They’ll have just seven scholarship receivers during spring. LSU lost Jazz Ferguson (transfer), Malachi Dupre (NFL declaration) and Travin Dural (eligibility exhausted) from last year.
QB Lowell Narcisse
Height, weight: 6-2, 235
High school (location): St. James (St. James)
Spring expectations: Doctors were expected to clear Narcisse earlier this month to participate in spring practice, he said in December. He’s one of four QBs battling for what Canada called a “wide open” starting competition, joining presumed favorite and senior Danny Etling, redshirt sophomore Justin McMillan and redshirt freshman Lindsey Scott.
DE Justin Thomas
Height, weight: 6-5, 265
High school (location): Spanish Fort (Spanish Fort, Alabama)
Spring expectations: The Mobile-area product is a versatile player, but he’ll likely be behind a host of players at positions with a good deal of depth. That said, Thomas rolled up 21 sacks during his career at Spanish Fort. He’ll be able to make up some ground on others who won’t arrive until the fall.
