TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — With a 3-2 lead, and the Crimson Tide on the brink of tying the match, senior Skylar Kuykendall broke Natalia Maynetto’s serve at love to clinch ninth-ranked LSU’s 4-3 win over the No. 38 Alabama Thursday at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
Kuykendall, a senior from Jasper, Alabama, defeated Maynetto 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to seal LSU’s first win in Tuscaloosa since 2007 and end a five-match losing streak to the Crimson Tide. The Lady Tigers improved to 12-3 and 1-0 in conference play. Alabama dropped to 4-5 with the loss.
LSU STARTS DARIUS RUCKER INTERCOLLEGIATE: In Hilton Head Island, S.C., the LSU women’s golf team is back in action Friday at the fifth Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Pete Dye Course of the Long Cove Club.
LSU sophomore Sydney Cavin of Baton Rouge comes in off her first individual win of her college career at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate posting a score of 5-under par 211 at English Turn in New Orleans.
Last year, LSU tied for second in the event and Sagstrom lost in a playoff after shooting 6-under in the 54-hole event.
Joining LSU and host South Carolina in the event are Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Duke, Furman, Georgia Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Southern California, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest. Southern Cal is the consensus No. 1 with Duke at 2, Arkansas at 3 and Alabama at No. 4 in Golfstat.
Cavin will be joined in the LSU lineup by seniors Elise Bradley and Nadine Dreher, junior Carly Goldstein and freshman Kathleen Gallagher.
LSU will go up in the final wave of the back nine, starting at 9:10 a.m. The first wave goes off at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
FORMER LSU TENNIS STANDOUT ED RUBIN PASSES AWAY: Ed Rubin, a key member of two of LSU men’s tennis teams that advanced to the NCAA semifinals, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Lafayette on Feb. 27 at the age of 38.
Rubin, a native of Lafayette, graduated from LSU with a degree in biology in 2002. He went on to earn his Juris Doctorate in Law from Southern in 2006. Rubin was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll from 1998-2000 and was named a National Merritt Scholarship winner.
As a member of the Tiger tennis team, Rubin helped LSU to a pair of Southeastern Conference titles in 1998 and 1999 as well as helping the squad to the 1999 SEC tournament title with a 4-3 win over Georgia.
Rubin, the brother of former professional tennis star Chanda Rubin, was also a member of LSU’s Final Four teams in 1999 and 2000.
Rubin finished his LSU career with a 41-43 singles mark and 36-21 in overall in doubles. He was ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation in doubles as a senior. He played his first two years at LSU under coach Jerry Simmons and his final two seasons with the Tigers came under current head coach Jeff Brown.
Funeral services for Rubin will be held Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Lafayette at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held before the service at Kinchen Funeral Home in Lafayette from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30. Interment at Calvary Cemetery will follow funeral services at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
TIGERS BEGIN SEC PLAY AGAINST FLORIDA: The No. 32 LSU men’s tennis team begins Southeastern Conference play Friday against No. 30 Florida at 5:30 p.m. at the LSU Tennis Complex.
The Tigers (6-3) are coming off a 4-2 loss to Tulane. Florida (5-3) swept Florida State with the first four courts of singles having ranked personnel for the Gators. Florida has five ranked singles players, along with the No. 1 and No. 32 doubles teams.
WRIGHT CRACKS TOP 20 IN PALMER CUP RANKINGS: After winning the individual title at The Prestige at PGA West in LSU’s spring season opener, senior All-American Zach Wright is the 18th-ranked American in college golf in the first Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking released Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The top six golfers in the final ranking from both the United States and Europe, which will be released on April 15, will be among the individuals selected to compete in this summer’s Palmer Cup being held June 24-26 at Formby Golf Club in Formby, Merseyside, England.
