HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Long Cove Club at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate has been a favorite for the nationally-ranked LSU women’s golf team with second- and third-place finishes there over the past two years.

In the team’s third straight appearance in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, the Lady Tigers are in second place after the first round of the 54-hole event, which runs through Sunday.

The seventh-ranked Lady Tigers posted an opening round of 7-over 291 over the par 71 layout to stand only behind Southern California, which is at 1-over 285. LSU is two shots up on Duke, Arkansas and North Carolina, tied for third at 293, 9-over par. Auburn and Arizona State are five more shots back in sixth at 298.

LSU will play with Southern Cal and Arkansas in the final wave off No. 1 at 9:10 a.m. in the second round on Saturday.

Sand volleyball

LSU FALLS TO TULANE, DEFEATS ARIZONA STATE TO OPEN SEASON: In Tucson, Ariz., the LSU sand volleyball team opened its season defeating Arizona State and falling to Tulane at the Arizona Invitational.

The Tigers defeated Arizona State 4-1 and dropped the match to Tulane 3-2 in the season opener.

The Tigers face Arizona at noon Saturday.

Men’s tennis

SOUTH CAROLINA DEFEATS TIGERS: In Columbia, S.C., the LSU men’s tennis team suffered its second defeat of the season and first conference loss as No. 40 South Carolina scored a 4-1 win.

LSU dropped to 11-2 and 2-1 in Southeastern Conference play, while South Carolina moved to 9-7 and 1-2.

LSU faces No. 4 Georgia (10-2, 3-0 SEC) on Sunday at noon.
