The Get Out & Fish! event scheduled for Saturday at Sidney Torres Park in St. Bernard Parish has been postponed, but will be rescheduled for later date.

Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist and program coordinator Danica Williams said the postponement is due to warmer weather that made stocking rainbow trout in the park’s pond an iffy proposition.

“Hopefully the forecast (of cooler weather) will hold true for next week and we will have the opportunity to stock (rainbow) trout next week for an event on (Dec. 19),” Williams said.

Rainbow trout need water at 65 degrees or colder to survive.

“We gave (St. Bernard organizers) the option to stock catfish this week and still have an event on Saturday, but they said, ‘No way,’ without any hesitation. They have been promoting rainbow trout and folks are excited,” Williams said.

Williams said all who have preregistered will be contacted by email.

“If the (water) temperature is too high next week, we will have to look at dates in January,” Williams said.
