ORANGE, Texas Gonzales pro angler Greg Hackney began defense of his 2014 Angler of the Year title by finishing fifth Sunday in the first Bassmaster Elite Series event of the year on the Sabine River.

Hackney’s four-day run produced a total of 42 pounds, 14 ounces, good enough for a $14,000 check, but was more than seven pounds behind wire-to-wire leader and former Bassmaster Classic champion Chris Lane’s 50-pound catch that earned the Guntersville, Alabama, angler $100,000. Hackney and Lane were the only anglers in the 113-man field to bring in a five-fish-per-day limit over the four-day tournament run.

Mike McClelland finished second at 46 pounds even, and Natchitoches born-and-raised Keith Poche finished 12th at 34-15.
