Player to watch

QB J.P. Douglas

Season stats: 68 completions, 140 attempts, 956 yards, 7 touchdowns, 4 interceptions

SU coach Stump Mitchell said this week that Douglas will start against Alabama State, but added that Dray Joseph, who didn’t play against Texas Southern, will resume his role of second-half reliever to Douglas. Mitchell also said that after watching video of last week’s loss, he counted 17 plays on which TSU hit or pressured Douglas. The offensive line has to give Southern’s quarterbacks more time to throw. When they get time, they have to be more accurate. Together, Douglas and Joseph have completed 52 percent of their passes, and they’ve thrown 12 interceptions.

Player to watch

FS Kejuan Riley

Season stats: 62 tackles, 7 interceptions, 11 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble

You know that theory about how the best offense is a good defense? Alabama State proves it. Riley ranks second in the nation with seven interceptions, and he’s part of a defense that ranks second in the nation with 32 takeaways. The Hornets constantly give their offense a short field, and as a result, Alabama State averages 26.8 points per game. ASU coach Reggie Barlow said defensive coordinator Cedric Thornton gives his players a chance to be aggressive, but that the players have also gained an edge because they notice opponents’ tendencies during film study.
