The Southern baseball team will have to wait another day before opening its Southwestern Athletic Conference road schedule at Arkansas-Pine Bluff this weekend.
The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader has been canceled because of bad weather, and the second game has been moved to Sunday to create a new doubleheader between the programs.
Jaguars coach Roger Cador said the change was because of poor playing conditions with the expectation of ice and rain on the playing field.
Cador added that both coaches didn’t want to play Monday because of class schedules.
While the change won’t affect the new pitching rotation Cador set going into this weekend, it does mean one of the expected starters won’t get his chance to throw against the Golden Lions.
Senior James Fontenot is that unfortunate pitcher this weekend as fellow senior Santos Saldivar and freshman Tyler Robinson will get the starts.
“As a senior, I want to play every game,” Saldivar said. “As a pitcher, I know I’m going to start one of the two games, so I’m not too worried abut that. It’s just another day off for me.
“Whenever we do make up that game, though, it’s going to be a four-day weekend and that’s going to be tough on our pitchers.”
