Player to watch

WR Charles Hawkins

Season stats: 9 receptions, 187 yards, 1 TD

Through the first three games, Hawkins was one of Southern’s most important players - a tough player and team leader who not only knew Stump Mitchell’s offense inside and out, but earned teammates’ respect for absorbing a series of big hits in the middle of the field. But Hawkins suffered a concussion Sept. 17 against Jackson State, and though he returned two weeks later, he didn’t seem quite the same. In light of Lee Doss’ suspension this week, Southern needs Hawkins and other wideouts to re-emerge.

Player to watch

QB Darius Smith

Season stats: 29 completions, 63 attempts, 535 yards, 7 TDs, 5 interceptions.

When training camp began, Smith was supposed to be little more than a bit player, a backup to an emerging star in Brandon Bridge. But slowly, Smith evolved into the No. 1 option at quarterback. In the words of coach Melvin Spears, the Braves needed someone who could “be a conductor,” and in last week’s win against Concordia, Smith threw four touchdown passes and only one interception. Then, this week, Alcorn announced that Bridge had been dismissed. The starting job now firmly belongs to Smith.
