AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn scored seven unearned runs in the second inning on its way to a decisive 18-6 win over Southern at Plainsman Park on Friday afternoon.
With two outs and the bases loaded, shortstop Troy Lewis mishandled Damon Haecker’s ground ball.
Auburn scored six more runs before Southern got out of the inning.
“If we had gotten out of that inning we might have done something. Half of their runs were unearned,” Southern coach Roger Cador said.
J’Markus George surrendered 10 runs — only three of which were earned — in five innings. Overall, Southern pitchers walked nine batters. Meanwhile, the Jaguars committed six errors.
“When you do that, its hard to beat an SEC team,” Cador said. “The bright spot was out hitting. As we go forward, these (older) guys will help our young players.”
Southern finished with 12 hits. Lewis led the Jaguars with three hits. Dondrayas Harris had two hits and four RBIs.
