After earning the school's first outright regular-season championship since 2013, Southern's women's basketball team is one of 32 teams to receive an automatic bid into the Women's National Invitation Tournament, which begins Wednesday.

The Jaguars will meet Alabama (17-13) on Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the opening round of the WNIT. First round game times are expected to be set by late Tuesday afternoon.

The Crimson Tide was defeated 71-64 by Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference tournament on March 1.

The 64-team WNIT field was announced shortly after the NCAA tournament field was revealed on Monday. The first round of the WNIT will run March 14-16; the second round is scheduled for March 17-20.

The tournament awarded automatic qualifying berths to each of the country's 32 conferences. A spot is given to each team that finishes highest in the regular-season conference standings and is not selected for the NCAA tournament.

Southern (17-13), the only Southwestern Athletic Conference team to qualify for the WNIT, was defeated 72-68 in Saturday's SWAC tournament championship game by Grambling State in Houston, Texas.
