HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to win the opener, 7-0, then went on to sweep Southern with a 10-0 win in a five-inning nightcap of a softball doubleheader here Thursday.
Southern, which travels to face LSU-Alexandria in a doubleheader on Saturday, fell to 2-13. Southern Miss is 9-12.
Beth Dietrich limited Southern to three hits and struck out five in the opener, with Faydr Hall, Allison Piercefield and Shawntall Steamer all collecting singles. Meanwhile, Carissa Turang and Brittany Lilly each had two of USM’s nine hits off Southern pitcher Carla Arismendi.
In the second game, USM scored three runs in the first and third innings, then four in the fourth to coast in the nightcap. Carolina Walker was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in and Mackenzie Sher a home run and three RBIs for the winners.
Steamer had the only hit for the Jaguars off USM pitcher Courtney Ramos. Gabrielle McDaniel was the losing pitcher for Southern.
