DECATUR, Ala. — Tracey Williams hit a game-tying three-run home run in the sixth inning and Mississippi Valley State scored three more in the eighth to defeat Southern 7-4 and knock the Jaguars into the losers bracket on the first day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference softball tournament Wednesday.

Southern (10-35) will play Grambling in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Delta Devils, who improved to 12-34, will play Jackson State winner at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Williams’ first homer of the season came against Southern starter Kayliegh Thomas and erased the Jaguars’ 4-1 lead.

Sarah Miller (4-5) relieved Thomas to start the eighth and Valley took control on RBI singles by Williams and Natalia Covarrubias. The final run came on an error by second baseman Amanda Pacheco.

The Jaguars took a 1-0 lead on Carla Arismendi’s RBI double in the first.

Southern extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Pacheco singled, advanced on Danielle Jackson’s sacrifice and scored on an error. Sydney Wesley hit an RBI triple and Alicia Barajas had an RBI single.
