Player to watch

DB D’Mekus Cook

Season stats: 17 tackles, four pass deflections, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one TD

Cook, a former starter at cornerback, lost his starting job to freshman LaMarkius Pettaway. But Cook has been invaluable as a nickel back, with an acrobatic interception against Jackson State and a 58-yard fumble return against Mississippi Valley State. Cook is part of a secondary that has rebounded from a disastrous season in 2010, when the Jaguars gave up a SWAC-high 25 touchdown passes. This season, they have allowed only three touchdown passes. But Southern will be tested against Prairie View, which averaged 391.3 yards of offense over the past four weeks.

Player to watch

RB/KR Jermaine Waddy

Season stats: 37 carries, 132 yards; 10 receptions, 101 yards, one TD; 23 kickoff returns, one TD

Waddy isn’t the team’s leading rusher or receiver, but he’s the kind of versatile player that can give Southern problems in space. Offensive coordinator Mark Orlando likes to make opponents cover the whole field with a spread-em-out attack, and so far, it’s been effective; the Panthers rank second in the SWAC at 30.8 points per game. The 5-foot-6, 165-pound Waddy fits right in. He is also dangerous on kickoff returns, and Southern’s special teams have been spotty this season, often giving opponents good field position. Waddy had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Texas Southern.
