Brian McCain scored a 1-yard touchdown with nine seconds left, lifting Southern to a 26-23 of Alabama State Saturday at Montgomery, Ala.

Southern blew a 19-7 fourth-quarter lead, but drove with three minutes left to get the short touchdown run.

Tim Clark scored two touchdowns, including a five-yard run with about three minutes left that gave Alabama State a 23-19 lead.

Alabama State (7-3, 72) rallied from a 19-7 fourth quarter deficit but Southern (4-6, 4-4) finally won a close one after losing four games by a touchdown or less.

J.P. Douglas, who got a surprise start at quarterback for SU, threw a an 18-yard first-half touchdown pass to Charles Hawkins and a 5-yard scoring pass in the third quarter to Lee Doss that built SU's lead to 19-7.

Jamie Payton, playing for the first time since being suspended for the the fight at the end of the Arkansas-Pine Bluff game, had an interception and a fumble recovery for the Jaguars.
