One excellent outing can be called a fluke. Two in a row means there might be something to this Southern defense. Jackson State is a bad offensive club to be sure, but Southern held the Tigers to 254 total yards, including just 67 on the ground. The Jaguars also forced three turnovers and sacked Jackson State three times. Coach Dawson Odums wanted his defense to play with pride, and it looks like it took the message to heart.

How about Herb Edwards? You remember when redshirt freshman Devon Benn looked like he was running away with the running back job? Edwards, a fifth-year senior who bided his time behind Leonard Fournette at St. Augustine High School and Lenard Tillery at Southern, has rushed for at least 120 yards in three straight contests.

Southern beat a winless Jackson State team the way it was supposed to. As the season reaches its final third, Southern’s rush offense and defense are operating at peak levels. Now the Jaguars just have to get Austin Howard going. The senior signal caller did not have a bad game Saturday, going 15-26 for 180 yards with two total scores, but for Southern to be the best version of itself, it needs Howard to be.
