Southern defensive end Aaron Tiller was named Southwestern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, had four tackles for loss, including three sacks, and forced two fumbles in the Jaguars 46-7 victory against Alabama A&M last Saturday in A.W. Mumford Stadium.
Tiller finished with five total tackles as Southern held the Bulldogs to 110 total yards. He took over the SWAC lead with 10 sacks for the season.
It was the ninth SWAC player of the week award won by Jaguars this season. Previously,
QB Austin Howard was named Offensive Player of the Week three times, RS Willie Quinn was named Special Teams Player of the Week three times and linebackers Daniel Brown and Kentavious Preston were named Defensive Player of the Week once each.
Alcorn State QB Lenorris Footman, who was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in relief of injured starter John Gibbs. Jr. in a victory at Southern three weeks ago, won that honor again Monday.
The sophomore from Monticello, Fla., accounted for 260 total yards and four touchdowns in the Braves’ 65-13 win at Texas Southern. Footman completed 11-of-18 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns. All of Footman’s scores came in the first half as Alcorn State took a 38-0 lead.
Former Rayville (La.) High School punter of Grambling was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
The junior averaged 33.6 yards on five punts, four of which were downed inside the 20-yard line in the Tigers 49-31 victory at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Prairie View freshman CB Dominique Weaver was named Newcomer of the Week. He had an interception, two pass break-ups and three tackles, including one for loss, in the Panthers 38-13 victory at Alabama State.
