The last time Southern played a baseball game, Easter Sunday was still a week away.

The Jaguars haven’t seen action since winning at Prairie View on March 24 to take two of three from the Panthers in a Southwestern Athletic Conference weekend series.

Southern (11-10) was originally slated to face UNO on Wednesday night, but that game is no longer part of the schedule (there’s some debate over whether the game was ever supposed to happen; at any rate, UNO was set to host Jackson State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday).

A three-game, nonconference series against Selma scheduled for this past weekend was called off after Selma ran into travel issues (the team bus broke down).

“We’ll practice and be ready for the weekend,” said Southern coach Roger Cador, whose Jaguars welcome Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a three-game SWAC series Saturday and Sunday at Lee-Hines Field.

“I think we’ll be just fine. Maybe a little rusty to start out, but it’s all about what you make of it. We’ll be fine.”

Cador considered an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday but opted instead to give his team the weekend off.

Cador said injured Jaguars like Sean Washington and Tyler Kirksey, both outfielders, could benefit from the time off. Third baseman Caleb Hatcher and outfielder D.J. Wallace are also out, but Cador doesn’t expect either of those two players back for a number of weeks.

The series against UAPB gets under way with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon followed by a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Southern enters the weekend one game behind Prairie View for first place in the Western Division standings.
