Southern women’s basketball coach Sandy Pugh was named Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and Briana Green, the Jaguars’ star senior forward, was named Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced Monday.

The awards were part of the SWAC's 2017-18 all-conference teams, which were selected by league head coaches and sports information directors.

Green and Southern men’s basketball senior forward Jared Sam were named to the All-SWAC first team.

Southern's women concluded a remarkable season at 15-12 (14-4 SWAC) with the conference’s first outright regular-season championship since 2013.

The Jaguars, who held their celebratory net-cutting ceremony on Sunday, have earned at least a share of the regular-season title four times in the past five seasons under Pugh.

Southern finished the 2017-18 season with the SWAC’s best scoring margin (+10.8) and best overall turnover margin (+5.74).

Green averaged 16.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, two of the league's top five marks. Green was routinely required to guard the opposing team's top scoring threat and acquired 2.4 steals per game.

Southern’s defense allowed 58.4 points per game, the second-fewest amount of points surrendered per night in conference play. The Jaguars ranked first in the SWAC in defending the 3-point line, allowing opponents to shoot a lousy 22.4 percent from 3.
