PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Sidney Umude scored a career-high 21 points but Southern gave up a 10-point second half lead before falling to Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78-76 in overtime Saturday afternoon at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Umude's 21-point effort led four Jaguars in double figures. Umude recorded his first double-double of the season, adding 12 rebounds off the bench as Southern fell to 5-12, 1-3 in the SWAC.

Jared Sam added his seventh double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Eddie Reese and Jamar Sandifer also scored in double figures for the Jaguars, adding 12 and 11 respectively.

UAPB (4-14, 4-0) went on a 12-5 run to close regulation, hitting two crucial 3-pointers in the closing moments. But Umude's dunk with 1:15 left gave Southern a 68-63 lead and the hope of snapping its losing skid.

Joe'Randle Toliver responded with a 3-pointer and a game-tying layup with 26 seconds left to knot the game at 68.

The Golden Lions had a chance to steal the win with a last-second shot after Reese turned the ball over, but Joe'Randle Toliver's shot just missed, sending the game to overtime tied at 68.

UAPB opened up the overtime period with a Terrence Banyard lay-up before Sam responded with a jumper from inside the paint off a Umude pass.

SU led 74-70 but could not hold on as UAPB stormed back scoring on a Steen jumper and a pair of Banyard free throws before McKnight put a dagger in the Jaguars with a three-point shot with 12 seconds to go to lift the Golden Lions to a 77-76 lead.

Trent Steen free-throw gave the Golden Lions a 78-76 lead with eight seconds in overtime.

The Jaguars had one more chance to either tie or win.

Southern chose the latter as Reese took it down the court and found Richard Lee camped out in the corner for a 3-point attempt that bounced off the rim and into the hands of UAPB's Travon Harper.

Southern struggled in the second half shooting 32 percent from the floor ending the game with a 35 shooting percentage. The Jags outrebounded UAPB 46-38.

After UAPB's Martaveous McKnight opened the night hitting the first shot from beyond the arc, Southern's DeRias Johnson, making his first career start, answered right back with a 3-pointer which ignited a 10-0 Jaguar run.

SU extended its lead to 25-15 on Reese's 3-pointer with 8:34 in the first half when UAPB flipped the switch and went on an 11-2 run cemented by a Steen Trent field goal to shrink the Jaguars lead to 27-26 with 5:14 left. The Jags took a 40-33 lead into half-time after an 11-7 run cemented by Jamar Sandifer two free-throw shots.

Southern will face the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devil at the Harrison HPER Complex in Itta Bena, Miss. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
