Player to watch

QB LaQuinton Evans

Season stats: 42 receptions, 670 yards, 6 touchdowns

When Evans is properly motivated, he’s the most dynamic player for either team. Need proof? Consider this: In the four games he had 90 or more receiving yards, Southern won. In the six games he had fewer than 90 yards, Southern lost. This is also the final game in an SU uniform for Evans, a senior from Mansfield who has friends on the Grambling football team. One other thing: In three Bayou Classics, he is 0-3. He wants to win. In other words, for this game, he should be properly motivated.

Player to watch

LB Cliff Exama

Season stats: 122 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble, 1 safety

If it seems like Exama has been at Grambling forever, well, there’s a reason for that. He started as a redshirt freshman in 2008, and though he missed much of last season with a knee injury, Exama isn’t any worse for the wear. In fact, he’s playing better than ever. Exama ranks 10th in the nation with 122 tackles, and he made a key fourth-quarter sack to preserve a 29-25 win over Texas Southern. “From Day 1, he has unquestionably been the leader of this football team,” coach Doug Williams said. “Not just defense, the football team.”
