WHAT WE LEARNED

Austin Howard is the most prolific thrower of footballs Southern has ever known. While his career is more marked by consistency rather than spectacularity, he was awfully shiny in his final home game. The new standards for Southern quarterbacks: 77 touchdowns, 8,817 yards (and counting). He broke both records in his final home game. Not a bad way to go out.

TRENDING NOW

A week after Jamar Washington turned in Southern’s first 100-yard receiving day, a fellow freshman one-upped him. Kendall Catalon exploded for 175 yards receiving on six catches, including a 68-yarder late in the fourth quarter. Southern’s young receiving corps is coming on strong. “I guess we can recruit,” Odums deadpanned after the game.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It has rarely been easy for Southern this season, and Saturday was no different. Drama took the wheel with a late fourth-quarter turnover, breathing life into Prairie View’s chances. But as has been the case for five straight weeks (and in some respects, Dawson Odums’ entire tenure), Southern sifted through the uneasiness and adversity to find the winning formula.
