At Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans, Southern dropped to 0-3 on the season with a 6-2 loss to fellow SWAC squad Alcorn State on Sunday.
Southern, which is missing several players because of eligibility concerns, opened the season with 15-0 losses to Grambling and Louisiana Tech on Friday and Saturday.
Jaguars pitcher Daniel Franklin allowed four runs and four hits in 5.2 innings Sunday.
“Today’s pitching was better,” coach Roger Cador said. “Daniel Franklin gave us a chance. He pitched well.”
Southern had just five hits, and both of its runs were scored on Alcorn errors.
“With my freshman players, we just are not capable of hitting right now,” Cador said. “They’re overwhelmed right now. Once we can get our people back, if compliance lets us have them back this week coming up ... I’m really not that concerned. Once we get them back, we’ll be a much better team.”
Southern is slated to play its home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday vs. Jackson State.
