Player to watch

RB Sylvester Nzekwe

Season stats: 108 carries, 425 yards, 3 TDs; 17 receptions, 198 yards, 1 TD

Shortly after Nzekwe fumbled twice during an Oct. 15 loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, coach Stump Mitchell called the running back to his office for a short chat. Mitchell acknowledged it happens sometimes - and most importantly, he said, Nzekwe shouldn’t beat himself up about it. Last week against Alcorn State, Nzekwe rebounded, breaking loose for two long runs and finishing with a career-high 134 rushing yards. Southern will need Nzekwe’s best effort against TSU, whose defense ranks No. 3 in the nation against the run, allowing only 71.6 yards per game.

Player to watch

DE Marquis Jackson

Season stats: 37 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 blocked kick

Alabama State coach Reggie Barlow called the 6-foot-5, 275-pound Jackson “an NFL player.” A former USC commitment who transferred to Texas Southern after a year in junior college, Jackson has always been a strong pass rusher. But TSU coach Kevin Ramsey said the junior has improved his skills in run defense. He’ll still play as an edge rusher on passing downs, but Ramsey said he can use Jackson in several spots. “He has linebacker-type skills, and that really helps out our secondary, and primarily our linebackers,” Ramsey said. “He creates downhill angles for our linebackers to run.”
