ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Cyesha Goree and Nicole Elmblad each notched double-doubles as Michigan cruised to an 83-59 win over Southern on Friday at Crisler Center to give coach Kim Barnes Arico her 300th career win.
Goree finished with 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds (13 in the first half), while Elmblad added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Siera Thompson led all scorers with 18 points off the bench, with Shannon Smith contributing 13 points and a game-high eight assists.
Kendra Coleman and Jasmine Jefferson each had 16 points to lead Southern, while Britney Washington added 11.
The teams traded baskets for the first five minutes, but with the score tied at 8-8, Michigan (8-4) went on a 16-3 run. Goree scored six straight points during that stretch, and Thompson scored 14 of her points in the first half, including 4-for-4 from 3-point range.
The Wolverines shot 61 percent from the floor in the first half and 60 percent from 3-point range while holding the Jaguars to 37 percent.
The Wolverines led 47-31 at halftime after Southern (3-5) closed with a 10-2 run.
The closest Southern got the rest of the game was 53-40 with 15:38 to play, but Michigan responded with a quick 8-0 run to restore the big lead. Elmblad keyed the run with back-to-back baskets, followed by successive jumpers from Goree and Val Driscoll.
Southern scored the next five points after the run ended, but Michigan went on a 12-2 run, leading by as many as 28 with 5:15 remaining.
The Wolverines outrebounded Southern 51-26 and led in points in the paint (44-12) and second-chance points (20-11).
