For the third time in the last four seasons, Southern will go into the Bayou Classic needing to beat Grambling to earn a spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game. Southern gave one of its more complete team performances of the year Saturday, completely shutting down a bad Texas Southern team the way it should have.

Senior quarterback Austin Howard has been fully healthy for each of the past three weeks, and it is clear what that means for the offense: He's the spark that lights Southern's fuse. Culminating with Saturday’s 501-yard, 33-point night, Southern has averaged 520 yards and 39 points per game in its past three. The Jaguars, once a struggling offensive club, suddenly look very good on that side.

Show of hands: Who thought Southern would be in this position before the season started? Now, same people: Who thought Southern would be in position after Howard was forced to miss several games with a knee injury? This was an excellent coaching job by Odums and staff, who took a bad hand and are on the cusp of winning the pot.
