When the Southern women’s basketball team takes the court Saturday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, coach Sandy Pugh will have her eyes on senior Miaya Crowder.

Crowder has been the Jaguars’ leader in the post this season, at times showing she’s capable of controlling the inside as well as anyone in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Pugh just needs to see her be that player for a full 40 minutes.

Crowder has 117 points and 52 rebounds through 12 games, but she has spent several of those games sitting on the bench for the majority of the night. She has played the fewest minutes of the four players who started every game this year.

Pugh has been frustrated with Crowder’s inability to stay out of foul trouble and her conditioning work this season, which led to the diminished playing time.

“Miaya’s got to want to play on both ends of the court and for the whole game,” Pugh said. “We’re just trying to get her to understand her value to the team. You’ve got to get over there, be aggressive and taking the charge. She’s clear on it; she just has to give us a little more energy.”

Saturday's game tips off at 3 p.m.

New look at home

Fans may notice a few new additions around the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Saturday.

The Jaguars recently purchased two inflatable tunnels for the teams to run out of during pregame, as well as two large banners that cover the seating sections at the top of the arena.

Southern also spruced up its VIP section at the end of the court, adding several new banners and chairs.

Southern men’s coach and interim athletic director Roman Banks said the additions are important to continue to build on the traditions surrounding the program and to give fans and players a better game experience.

“We’re able to get some quality things and make it look like a basketball arena,” Banks said. “It’ll help us loosen up and help our kids and our fans have a god time. In this day and time, if you can remodel your house, it can help you rebuild a sense of pride. This is customary with basically everywhere you go now. For us to get to this point is major for us.”

Promotion schedule released

Southern released its promotion schedule for the rest of the season, beginning with Church Night against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.

Monday night is Greek Night, when members of Southern’s fraternities and sororities are encouraged to support the Jaguars against Mississippi Valley State.

Southern will host its annual Alumni Night and game Feb. 4 when the Jaguars play Grambling.

Unlike past years, Southern moved the alumni game to immediately followingg the evening’s scheduled games, instead of before them.

Military Night will be Feb. 6, when Jackson State comes to town. Free entry will be given to those who show a military ID.

Legends Night is still in the works, but Southern set the date for Feb. 18 when the Jaguars play Alabama A&M.

Pink Night will be Feb. 20; all fans are encouraged to where pink to the games against Alabama State.

As always, Senior Night will be the final home game of the season, this year falling on Feb. 25 against Alcorn State.
