The Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament on Monday was officially moved to the MLB Urban Youth Academy in New Orleans.
The Advocate reported last week that the academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium had been selected as the alternate site after the May 14-18 tournament was removed from Fort Worth, Texas, because of safety concerns at LaGraves Field.
“We would like to apologize to the fans, families, coaches and administrators for the delay and inconvenience the decision of switching venues may present,” SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp said in a statement. “The health and welfare of the student-athletes will always be our primary concern.”
The double-elimination tournament features the top four teams from each division, and the championship game is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPNU. Southern did not qualify for the tournament after finishing last in the West.
The Urban Youth Academies have been sites for the MLB Urban Invitational, an annual round-robin tournament designed by Major League Baseball to highlight historically black colleges and universities and their baseball programs.
