USA Today travel site searched the entire nation for the best historic home tour -- and found two in Louisiana within 25 miles of each other.

Houmas House Plantation and Gardens in Darrow and Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie are among 20 historic houses on the list. Readers can vote for their favorite, once per day, until 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21. As of noon Tuesday, Houmas House was ranked No. 3 and Oak Alley was ranked No. 9 of the 20 houses.

About Houmas House, the site said the restored mansion and grounds "reflect the opulent lifestyle of the sugar barons who once lived there," pointing out that the mansion is decked out with garlands, lights and Christmas trees for the holidays.

Oak Alley is described as "one of the most photographed plantations in Louisiana" featuring a quarter-mile avenue of 28 giant live oaks leading up to the house. It too is dressed in "greenery and seasonal décor" throughout December. highlights top attractions, restaurants and other travel destinations in the U.S. and world, selected by a team of local travel experts. No business pays to be listed, the site says.
