BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Members of a Biloxi church and the mayor who led the town through a Category 5 hurricane read the names of 131 people who died and 41 unaccounted for after Hurricane Camille.
The ceremony at the Camille Memorial, a marble wall engraved with the names, was one of two on Saturday — the hurricane’s 44th anniversary.
As former Biloxi mayor Danny Guice, Church of the Reedemer member Judy Guice and others read the names, Guice put a rose on each panel of the wall.
Earlier, a few people went to Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport to honor three women who never were identified. Their headstones bear the names Faith, Hope and Charity and all that was known of them — their estimated ages, weights and what they were wearing.
