MIAMI (AP) — A new tropical depression has formed in the Atlantic, west of the Cape Verde Islands, and could become a tropical storm within a day.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the depression is about 870 miles (1400 kilometers) west of the Cape Verde Islands, with maximum winds of 35 mph (56 kph). It is moving at 13 mph (21 kph), and expected to keep moving west or northwest for the next couple of days.
The weather service says it could become a tropical storm late Thursday.
No coastal watches or warnings are in effect.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Odile is slowly strengthening as it swirls in the Pacific off Mexico’s southern coast. The National Hurricane Center says Odile is expected to get stronger and become a hurricane on Friday.
