CHALMETTE (AP) — For the first time since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the Louisiana Land Trust is selling St. Bernard Parish lots on which buyers may build new homes.
Previous sales of St. Bernard Parish lots sold into the old Road Home program allowed only expansions — not new home construction.
The Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/R1VWuv ) reports that individuals can buy up to four lots, and about one-fifth of the 2,400 remaining lots are expected to be sold in the current sale. The state is taking letters from interested parties — and a $350 appraisal and mailing fee for each lot — through Aug. 28. If more than one person is interested in a lot, it goes to auction.
Interested people must close on the property within 30 days of signing a purchase agreement.
