RESERVE — St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified the man and boy killed Sunday evening when the experimental aircraft they were flying in crashed at the Reserve Airport.

They two were identified Monday as Darren Mahler, 47, and a family friend, Payton Wilt, 13, both of Metairie.

They were flying in a small helicopter-like aircraft called a gyrocopter at an altitude of 300 just after 5 p.m. when the aircraft’s top rotor blades collapsed, causing it to crash into the nearby canal.

The airport is closed while the while the Federal Aviation Administration investigates the incident.
