Saturday, April 12, 2014. Thomas lost her title to Morgan who consumed 2.7 pounds in 10 minutes. Thomas finish second with 2.2 pounds in a field of eight contestants.

Louisiana’s top-ranked eater hopes to add another notch to his belt this weekend.

Champion eater Adrian Morgan will try to become the world gumbo eating champion in a contest Saturday at the Larose Civic Center, WWL-TV reported. In eight minutes, Morgan will try to eat as much gumbo as he can – possibly a gallon and a half, he said.

At the same time, the record for most gumbo will also be attempted, Cynthia Caronna told WWL. A group hopes to make 5,000 pounds of gumbo, beating the record of 3,700 pounds set by chef John Folse in Alabama several years ago.

“When we heard that the record for gumbo was in Alabama, we said…we can’t stand that,” Caronna said. “We need it back here in Louisiana.”

Guinness World Records will be there to adjudicate, Caronna told the station.

The contest starts at noon Saturday at the Larose Civic Center. See the full report from WWL-TV here.
