RACELAND (AP) — Louisiana State Police say a trooper shot and wounded a driver during a confrontation following a traffic stop Sunday night in Raceland.

State Police Sgt. Nick Manale said a trooper spotted Preston Perez, 48, driving a minivan recklessly on Louisiana Highway 308. Perez then lost control of the vehicle, hitting a bridge before ending up on the other side of the road.

Manale said a confrontation ensued and the unidentified trooper fired at Perez. Police later determined Perez had allegedly carjacked the minivan from the Thibodaux area.

Perez was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Manale said he’ll face charges upon release from the hospital.
