PINEVILLE — Hikers, horse riders and off-road vehicle enthusiasts have one more weekend to check out one of the Kisatchie National Forest’s most popular trails before it closes for winter maintenance and improvements.

Administrators said the 36-mile-long Sandstone Trail closes every winter. This year, it will close Monday and reopen April 27.

About half of the forest’s 400 miles of trails are dedicated to off-road and all-terrain vehicle use.

Kisatchie District Ranger Mike Dawson said work is planned on bridge approaches and creek crossings.
