A 22-year-old woman died in a head-on crash while going the wrong way on Interstate 55 between Independence and Amite in Tangipahoa Parish, according to a State Police report.
The crash happened shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday, Trooper 1st Class Dustin Dwight said in the news release.
A Dodge Caravan, driven by Summer Graves, of Amite, was traveling the wrong way on I-55, heading northbound in the left southbound lane, Dwight said. A Toyota Tundra, driven by Jackie Hartfield, 63, of Columbia, Mississippi, was southbound in the left lane when the two vehicles collided.
Graves, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.
Hartfield, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center with minor injuries.
Troopers suspect Graves was impaired at the time of the crash. Blood samples were obtained from both drivers and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
