SHREVEPORT (AP) — Parts of a Shreveport funeral home were destroyed by fire Wednesday morning.
Firefighters said Patterson Funeral Home, just north of downtown Shreveport, was fully engulfed when they arrived on the scene around 5:30 a.m.
Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the building.
Witnesses reported seeing clouds of black smoke from at least a mile away. More than 12 units were on the scene.
Scott Wolverton, fire department spokesman, said there was one body inside of the funeral home at the time and firefighters were able to get it out.
“Right now there is no indication of what the cause is,” Wolverton told The Times (http://bit.ly/OYnaiN). “They tried to make entry, but the fire had extended too far up in the open space of the building. For the safety of the firefighters we had to pull them out and do a defensive attack.”
Firefighters managed to save a portion of the westside of the building, he said.
