LSU softball -- and baseball -- made program history Tuesday.

The softball Tigers (27-1) ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest USA Today/NFCA top 25 poll, marking the first time the program has reached the top spot.

LSU won two of three games at Florida, the previously undefeated and No. 1 team, this past weekend.

“There have been so many great players in this program’s history who have truly helped in building LSU softball and paving the way for this ranking and the success of this year’s team," LSU coach Beth Torina said. "We have a special group of young women that truly understand the team concept and have worked hard to accomplish everything they have done so far this season.

"We are honored by the respect we have been shown for our accomplishments to this point; however, we have a clear understanding that there is still a long way to go in the 2015 season.”

The Tigers opened the season by winning its first 25 games, surpassing the previous mark of 24 consecutive victories set in 2010.

LSU hosts Nicholls on Tuesday the No. 6 Oklahoma on Friday and Saturday at Tiger Park.

Meanwhile, on Monday the LSU baseball team retained its Top 3 position across several polls after a week that saw the Tigers take two of three games from Ole Miss and beat McNeese State.

LSU baseball is ranked No. 1 in Baseball America's poll, marking the first time the softball and baseball teams have been No. 1 simultaneously.
