A 14-year-old boy is missing after authorities say he jumped into the Mississippi River following a high-speed car chase with St. Bernard sheriff’s deputies Thursday.

Shortly before 2 a.m., St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlmann said deputies attempted to pull over a silver infinity FX35 near the intersection of Paris Road and Casa Calvo Street in Chalmette after witnessing a moving violation.

The car, which was later determined to have been stolen out of Orleans Parish two days earlier, refused to stop and fled the scene at a high rate of speed, going southbound on Paris Road, Pohlmann said. The car then disregarded the traffic signal at the St. Bernard Highway intersection and drove onto the Chalmette Ferry landing before swerving off the roadway and crashing into the landing’s guardrail.

Pohlmann said the driver of the car – who authorities believe is the missing 14-year-old – fled from the disabled car southbound on the ferry landing, and was last seen in the Mississippi River on the east side of the Chalmette Ferry landing.

A passenger inside the car, a 15-year-old boy, tried to escape but was apprehended by deputies shortly after exiting the car. The teen, who like the missing 14-year-old is from New Orleans, was arrested and booked on charges of resisting arrest, possession of stolen property and obstruction of justice. Pohlmann said the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be added.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is working in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard and the New Orleans Harbor Police in the ongoing search for the missing teen.
